“I am inspired by the landscape. My paintings are a merger between the landscapes of the outer and inner world ~ linking the two with color and geometry.”
A Plein Air Colorist, Dorothy Fagan asks us to share her intense feelings for the landscape by seeing it’s subtle and sometimes startling colors. The landscape, she believes, is a mirror of our own inner landscape ~ each of us charged with intense color, great depth and passion. She paints, “to provide a window to the soul.”
Dorothy paints in oil and pastel, on location en plein air and in her glass-walled studio near the water. The direct proximity of her easel to the landscape plays a critical role in getting her passion on canvas. Likewise, she uses her printmaking studio in the same way ~ creating hand-pulled pigmented prints imbued with her own sensitivity, depth and passion.
Her work has been featured in two PBS specials and is included in over two hundred private collections in the U. S., England, Lebanon and Canada. She earned a B. F. A. in Printmaking and Painting from East Carolina University and completed a ten-year Painting Mentorship in American Impressionist Painting with Robert B. Mayo, Valentine Museum and Gallery Mayo. She has focused her work on the use of intuitive color for thirty years, developing her own unique Color Sensing Technique and has written three books; The Suncatcher, Ping Journal and Dinner with the Muse.
