Inspired by the Water…
by admin on Apr.27, 2009, under Larry Ashe
Larry Ashe
“I am inspired by the water, the boats and the peacefulness.”
Best known for his boats; work boats, fishing boats, docks and sailing vessels ~ the flavor of the Chesapeake rings true in Larry Ashe’s paintings.
An old sea captain’s house on the Piankatank River is home and studio for Larry. The water inspires Larry to paint bouyboats, heron and traditionally constructed boathouses on the Bay.
Many of his paintings have his trademark black background; night views of familiar vessels resting in peace.

I paint en plein air throughout Mathews during most months, yes even in winter! Some of my favorite spots include the marsh at New Point, Bethel Beach, Aarons’ Beach, Haven Beach and the little public beach off Misty Cove in Hallieford near my studio.
When I am not painting on location, I am in the studio in Hallieford (Sail Cove) behind the pond. I paint there most days throughout the year. If you are looking for something special, you are welcome to come by and see what’s new. Call or email me to check the best time to visit.
This year I have created my Bay Country Landscapes Tile Mural Collection. They are hand painted on marble tiles. And are suitable for installation for kitchen, bath, decks and spas. You will find a wonderful selection on Kindred Gardens.

New to the tour this year, Gary brings an ‘old master’ technique to contemporary subjects.
Using the light and dark contrasting technique called ‘chiaroscuro,’ Gary creates dimension in contemporary stylized boats and water scenes. He accents his monochrome canvases with a touch of red ~ applying the less is more principle with stunning effect.
